Important Aspects of LCD Module Design for Handheld Applications

Glass Design

Ideally, the pixel size should not go below the threshold of 0.25mm. Otherwise, the quality of the images may be seriously compromised. Especially for small handhelds, it’s important for the pixels to be a bit larger so that the characters can be read better, which is why in practice, the pixel sizes are usually set above 0.30mm. The easier the user recognizes the characters on-screen, the better their user-experience becomes.

Viewing Area

The viewing area is a defined space within the monitor where all the information is flashed. A trend among small handhelds is to put in as much information as possible in one screen. The challenge is how to do so while keeping the interface clean and not crowded to the eye. Usually, the display size of an LCD module can accommodate anywhere from two lines of 10 characters to as much as eight lines of 20 characters.

Backlighting

Another crucial element to the LCD module is the backlighting, which primarily serves as illumination to the display. Having a good backlight makes displays bright and easily readable. However, it may be useful to install a blue light filter for easier viewing at night or in dark areas.
