Capacitive touch technology has been around since nineteen hundreds, but with the recent popularity of smart phones, capacitive sensors had come to the forefront of touch screen technology as the touch screen LCD display module of choice. In Capacitive touch, this particular technology as both an insulator and a conductor, glass as our insulator and indium tin oxide as a conductor. Once a touch accure and distortion of the screen’s electrostatic field, measurable as a change in capacitance. There are few disadvantages with capacitive touch, such as using gloves, the sensors would appear disable which lead to the affects usability in many consumer electronics, for example, touch tablets and smartphones during cold weather. Within a capacitive touch the controller itself continually scans, and monitors the capacitance of the electrodes. Base on the mechanics behind capacitive touch, is that these sensors have a capacitor at each intersection of each row and each column. For example, a 12x16 array would have 192 independent capacitors. Base on its voltage, this is applied to both the row and columns.

The primary source of any form of error in capacitance measurements is stray capacitances. Projected Capacitance touch panel screens are made up of a matrix of columns and rows with conductive materials which is then put on a sheet of glass. The process of such technique is done by etching a conductive layer to from a matrix or grid pattern of electrodes, or by etching two separate perpendicular layers of conductive materials with parallel lines to form a grid. The way this works is by applying voltage to the grid pattern of electrodes, to form conductivity when the user touches screen, this form of distortion is measurable as a change in capacitance. Projective capacitive touch panel can sometime be interfere with the performance of a capacitive touch lcd due to moisture on the surface of the capacitive touch lcd, high humidity, or the collection of dust, all these factors interfere with the performance issues of any Capacitive touch lcd.

Most of the TFT capacitive touch screen displays come in two different type of capacitance one is mutual and other is self capacitance. The self capacitance sensor has the same x and y coordinate but the columns and rows operate independently. Mutual capacitance is the second type of projected capacitance which implies that most objects that are conductive would be able to hold a charge if they are close together. The way mutual capacitance is design is that in every major intersection of each row and column there is a capacitor. The great thing about mutual capacitance is that multi-touch is allowed where multiple palms/styli or fingers can track accurately at the same time. There are resistive touchscreen which is a transparent electrically resistive layers separated by a thin space. There are in series to each other, one layer has a conductive mechanism along its side and the other along the top and bottom, once this is done a voltage is applied to one it’s layer while sensed by the other to create a touch/resistive.
